Clear & Sweet | In Development
NDP Tour Support Available
October 2016 - November 2017

Clear & Sweet is a multi-disciplinary performance incorporating dance, visuals and live vocals based on an inquiry into Sacred Harp Singing and choreographer, Zoe Scofield's connection to her Southern roots.

Sacred Harp Singing is a form of a capella choral singing founded in Souther Baptist churches and now practiced in secular groups. The strikingly raw singing - it only uses 4 notes that can be sung by anyone - caught Zoe's attention while on a 2013 trip home to Georgia and became a powerful lens for exploring the complexities of growing up in the South. Recognizing commonalities between SHS and her own work with visual artist Juniper Shuey - a desire to bring redemption through physical exertion and to allow for personal experiences of worship in the company of others - zoe | juniper will bring these unexpected synchronicities to the stage.

With multiple public workshops, residencies and informal showings, zoe | juniper will experiment with ways to create an immersive sonic, physical and visual experience by bringing together Sacred Harp Singing with zoe | juniper aesthetics. 2016 performances are confirmed at Contemporary Art Center New Orleans, On the Boards Seattle, Bates Dance Festival, New York Live Arts and Carolina Performing Arts.

BeginAgain | On Tour 2015

“BeginAgain is pure magic! Exquisite. Every choice, from the dance, to light, to film, to costume, to sound, and then! Scofield and Shuey are a powerful match!"
– Alexandra Wells, Juilliard

BeginAgain questions multiplicity of self, memory and perspective through two parallel solos weaving in and out of each other. Juniper Shuey’s futuristic design explores new technological methods juxtaposed against Zoe Scofield’s intense, primal choreography, featuring Ms. Scofield and duet partner Ariel Freedman (Batsheva Dance Company, Kidd Pivot), triggers a raw tableaux of movement and stage designs. BeginAgain reveals an intrinsic truth about oneself and the aspects of humanity that unite us all.

BeginAgain was co-commissioned by On the Boards through the support of their Performance Production Program and The Joyce Theater in partnership with 3-Legged Dog and received support from The Princess Grace Foundation Special Projects Award, National Dance Projects Tour Support and Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant. Portions of BeginAgain were developed and performed in-process with support at Velocity Dance Center (Seattle), gloATL (Atlanta), Frye Art Museum (Seattle), City Arts Festival (Seattle), Springboard Dance (Montreal) and BodyTraffic (Los Angeles). Additional support was provided through the Glenn H. Kawasaki Foundation and the support of individual donors.
