Worth My Salt | Jody Kuehner

April 29 - May 1, 2016
Portland Center Stage | Ellen Bye Studio Theatre
128 NW 11th Ave | Portland, OR

A one-of-a-kind dance spectacular originally produced and presented by Velocity's Made in Seattle dance development program.

Drawing on Carl Sagan's series Cosmos and female icons Kate Bush and Diane Keaton - Worth My Salt looks at the timely theme of gender inequity through the lens of an existential crisis. How do we prove our worth? How do we feel worthy? Cherdonna's unique vision brings together dance and drag with clowning's ability to tug on heartstrings, cabaret's warm intimacy, and performance's ability to shatter taboos to make sharp social commentary.

Beginning with a structured improvisational warm-up, Scott's workshop examines the solo form through a series of choreographed phrases, action words and visual scores. Tools for manipulating and developing material for performance will underscore our work. This workshop serves as an audition to identify an additional soloist for the project.

Created by students with hip hop/street/contemporary choreographer Amy O'Neal and under the musical direction of classical, jazz, and funk inspired hip hop artist Kev Choice, Citizen Dance will also express the emotional tenor of the current UC Berkeley undergraduate dancers, including addressing themes of anxiety and invisibility.

April 2 + 9, 2016 | 12 PM - 3 PM
V2 | 1525 11th Ave

This work uses improvisational scores to examine the components associated with creating non-linear, non-narrative performance art. Structures are designed to dissect elements such as personal movement vocabulary, space / architecture, theatrical elements, time / timing, identification of an idea and development, risk and wild card. Participants focus on defining each element’s parameters and universal properties, as well as individual likes / dislikes and aesthetics. Over time the elements combined in multiple configurations, allowing the work to develop in complexity and possibility. Because the class uses improvisational scores as the exploration device, the group also focuses on working effectively with an ensemble, maximizing opportunities for intelligent, in the moment decision-making, or spontaneous composition.

Cherdonna Shinatra Patron Saint of Velocity
Friday Nov 13, 2015 | 3:00 - 5:00 PM
Frye Art Museum

Jody Kuehner will perform Cherdonna Shinatra, Patron Saint of Velocity—an early manifestation of a performance to premiere in June 2016 as part of Velocity’s 20th Anniversary season. This performance is part of a suite of queer, feminist dance performances by drag/dance bio-fem Cherdonna to be developed, in part, through Velocity’s Made in Seattle new dance development program.

Cherdonna’s “action painting” performance is an homage to the feminist performance tradition of the female body as canvas and political territory for social change, rebellion, and personal expansion. The performance combines vintage feminist ideals with present day queer drag vision.

KSD SAM_Final-page-001.jpg

October 23 - 24, 2015 | 7:30 PM
October 25, 2015 | 6:30 PM
Velocity Dance Center

An evening of cross-continental dance - set to high-octane original jazz and part of UW Dance Program's 50th Anniversary Celebration.

A part of the University of Washington's 50th Anniversary, Encore Performance KSD with the Sam Boshnack Quintet features works by celebrated UW dance artists. From Seattle to Switzerland, artists Karin Stevens (1999 Alum), Penny Hutchinson (Adjunct Faculty and Teaching Artist) and Jurg Koch (Professor 2004 - 2014) showcase their individual choreographic styles with 5 works set to live original jazz music.
Moved by the recent work of prolific Seattle trumpeter and composer Samantha Boshnack and a desire to build community and expand KSD's reach, Karin brings together an artistic team of UW alumni, alumni faculty, and 10 new dancers. Back by demand, the four returning works and one new work pull inspiration from man-made and natural powerful local structures like the 99 Viaduct and Puget Sound, lively Juba music, intimate relationships and idiosyncrasies that occur inside of ensemble.
Karin's three-movement finale work - Dormant, Exploding, Syndrome, Ash Cloud - explores unexpected life eruptions with an expanded 12-dancer cast. Using the inspirations for Dormant, Karin aims to raise awareness for the Ben Townes Foundation and Seattle's revolutionary childhood cancer research.

"Masterful artistry with precise timing, exacting movement and a sophisticated sense of flow." - Cyrus Khambatta, Seattle International Dance Festival

Divas Take The Hill
5th Anniversary

Benefitting PSKS: Peace for the Streets by Kids from the Streets
Successfully raised $8,000 ($3,000 over our goal!)

June 18, 2015 | 7:30 - 10PM
12th Ave Arts

Divas Take the Hill was born five years ago as the brain child of Team Diva Real Estate, Retail Therapy, and Toys in Babeland. Five years ago we were in the throws of a recession and Team Diva wanted to do something to give a stage to their favorite Divas, raise money for a good cause, and kick off gay pride old school style. Team Diva hosted the very first Divas Take the Hill inside Retail Therapy. They raised over $1,300 for Three Dollar Bill Cinema. Five years later, Team Diva has raised over $10,000 for Three Dollar Bill Cinema, Marriage Equality, Rise and Shine and PSKS. This is their part to bring the gay back to the Hill. Come raise some money for a good cause, see the Team Diva glitter family Donnatella Howe, Miss Kitty and Sylvia O'Stayformore shine on the Diva stage.

Divas Take the Hill has become the premiere Gay Pride Kick Off party on Capitol Hill. It is your only time you can see the city’s best drag, burlesque, and GLBTQ talent in ONE spot before they hit the road entertaining the masses in the Pacific Northwest. This year all of the proceeds from the event go directly to PSKS. We may have gay marriage in Washington State but kids are still being kicked out onto the streets by their parents because they are gay, queer, questioning, or escaping a really horrible family situation. It is not right and we need to do something about it!

Glimmer Has Begun!
Workshop + Audition

KT NIEHOFF

May 14, 15 + 16, 2015 | 12 – 3 PM
Velocity Dance Center | Founders Studio

In 2006, KT began investigating the relationship between audience, artist and proximity. This search led her to seek out environments that ask the performer and the witness to confront each other in more potent ways. A Glimmer of Hope or Skin or Light, in all its forms, is an outcropping of this search beginning with the premise that every interaction holds untapped potential, that can sculpt uncommon encounters, moody collisions, raucous spectacle and virtuoso dancing – asking for more resonant connection and embracing the success or failure that ensues.

Niehoff is expanding her posse of vibrant performers and seeks 6-10 showgirls to perform in the Fall 2015 remount of this work to be presented at ACT Theater. Join her for 3 days of risk taking, dancing, and fearless encounters.

BeginAgain on Tour

“BeginAgain is pure magic! Exquisite. Every choice, from the dance, to light, to film, to costume, to sound, and then! Scofield and Shuey are a powerful match!" – Alexandra Wells

BeginAgain questions multiplicity of self, memory and perspective through two parallel solos weaving in and out of each other. Juniper Shuey’s futuristic design explores new technological methods juxtaposed against Zoe Scofield’s intense, primal choreography, featuring Ms. Scofield and duet partner Ariel Freedman (Batsheva Dance Company, Kidd Pivot), triggers a raw tableaux of movement and stage designs. BeginAgain reveals an intrinsic truth about oneself and the aspects of humanity that unite us all.

Seattle Premiere A Book is not a Ladder

KT Niehoff
Commission by Acrobatic Conundrum
SANCA | Seattle, WA
January 30 - February 8, 2015

The Seattle-based circus arts troupe Acrobatic Conundrum will be opening their latest production The Language of Chance featuring A Book is Not a Ladder choreographed by KT Niehoff.

KT Niehoff and Elizabeth Klob each directed and choreographed an original circus piece culminating in one evening length performance: The Language of Chance. The show draws inspiration from Jorge Luis Borges’ story, Library of Babel. In an infinite universe lined with books that are uniformly gibberish, the human element searches for meaning. The acrobats find themselves at odds between the sensations of falling forever, and the Sisyphean task of looking for story in a nonsensical world.

The dynamic cast of A Book is Not a Ladder debuted the work in NYC as part of the Summerstage Series.
